Curcuma longa L. — cured, dried and milled rhizome (haldi)
Ground turmeric trades on curcuminoid content and on proof that nothing has been added to it. The statutory floor is 2% curcuminoids on a dry basis, but the parameters that separate a credible offer from a risky one are the adulteration controls: lead chromate must test negative, no added colouring matter, and total starch capped at 60%. Acid-insoluble ash at 1.5% maximum is the practical proxy for sand and grit carried through from field drying — it is the number to watch if you are receiving material that looks clean but assays poorly. For EU import, turmeric is named in the aflatoxin schedule at B1 ≤ 5.0 µg/kg and total ≤ 10.0 µg/kg, with lead at 1.50 mg/kg under the root-and-rhizome spice class. Standard grind is 60–80 mesh; specify the screen system in the contract, since mesh conventions differ between suppliers.
